Kentucky Oaks favourite Songbird soared again and hit a perfect six this weekend in Saturday’s $101,380 Santa Ysabel (G3) at Santa Anita. Songbird is an American Thoroughbred race horse who is trained by Jerry Hollendorfer and was ridden on Saturday by jockey Mike Smith. She was undefeated in four starts in 2015 in Grade I races such as the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, the Chandelier Stakes and the Del Mar Debutante Stakes.
Speaking about the emphatic win on Saturday, Smith said, “I got a bit star struck. When I looked over at the big screen to see if I needed to do a little bit of work, and I was just in awe of how easily she was doing things, again. I couldn’t seem to take my eyes off the big screen. I told myself, ‘I better get back to it and stay on.’” These comments came directly from the official Kentucky Derby website.
Songbird coasted to victory and owner Rick Porter couldn’t have been any more pleased. “It’s such a fantastic feeling when you get a horse like this,” said Porter. He then went on to say, “I’ve had some good ones, but I’m not sure I’ve ever had one this good.” The next event for Songbird is the April 9th Santa Anita Oaks (G1).
In other news, the $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks and the Grade 3, $800,000 Sunland Park Derby have been cancelled and replaced on March 20th with the $200,000 Plum Pretty and the $415,000 Sunland Park Festival of Racing Stakes. It was announced late on Monday that one of the reasons for these two fixtures being cancelled was an attempt to protect “the integrity of the Sunland Derby and the Oaks with regards to graded status and points for the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks.”
According to a Churchill Downs spokesperson, neither of these revised fixtures will reward points for the Kentucky Derby or Kentucky Oaks while the Sunland Park Derby and Sunland Park Oaks were both scheduled to reward 50-20-10-5 points for first place, second place, third place and fourth place, respectively.
Right now on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard, Mohaymen is sitting pretty at the top of the leaderboard with a total of 71 points. In second place as it stands is Gun Runner with 51 points. In third place with 50 points is Shagaf and in fourth place right now with 30 points is Nyquist.
