Chitu fends off Stablemate Midnight Hawk & other Top Stories

Added on: March 25, 2014

The Grade III $800,110 Sunland Derby over the weekend was dominated by two Hall-of-Fame-trainer Bob Baffert’s horses when Chitu repelled a last ditch challenge by stablemate, Midnight Hawk. This latest win earned Chitu a massive 50 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard, bringing his total to 54 points. The other 4 points came on February 8th when Chitu was runner-up to Candy Boy in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita.

Midnight Hawk is trailing Chitu by just 2 points with a total of 52 points and although Midnight Hawk was in front at one point in the race, he eventually failed to capitalise and Chitu managed to steal the lead when entering the final stretch. The only other horses to have earned 50 or more points so far include California Chrome (50 points), Ring Weekend (50 points) and Wildcat Red (also 50 points). Intense Holiday now has 50 points, and then it’s Chitu on 54, Hoppertunity on 55 and at joint-top of the leaderboard is Samraat and We Miss Artie, who are both on 60 points.

An injury for Honor Code, winner of the Remsen Stakes, means that he will not be able to compete in this years’ Kentucky Derby. A light tear was detected on Sunday in his right hind upper suspensory. “It will heal, we discovered it this morning. We'll give it 60 days and then re-evaluate it,” said Hall of Fame trainer, Shug Mcgaughey. The Kentucky Derby 2014 is fast approaching and is scheduled to take place on Saturday 3 May at Churchill Downs, which means that there’s less than 40 days left to go.

Some of the other upcoming events that you can look forward to in the meantime include the Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park on March 29. Also on the same day there’s the Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds and the UAE Derby at Meydan, the latter of which is an impressive horse racing facility in Dubai. On April 5, the Wood Memorial will take place at the Aqueduct racetrack in New York.

The winners from each of these events will walk away with 100 points, second place will receive 40 points, third place will earn 20 points and 10 pints will be awarded to fourth place.
