Added on: Sept. 13, 2016
Texas Chrome, ridden by jockey C.J. McMahon and trained by J.R. Caldwell, won the Super Derby at Louisiana Downs on Saturday 10th September, 2016. The Keene Thoroughbreds horse and Super Derby Prelude winner won in a time of 1:49:87, beating second place Dalmore by a half-length in the Grade 3 event which had a $400,000 purse.
This latest victory is the sixth win for Texas Chrome and it was also his biggest win to date. In fact, this was also the biggest win for Texas Chrome’s trainer and jockey. This weekend event was the centrepiece of a meeting which consisted of five stakes races that were cumulatively worth $700,000 in prize money.
Texas Chrome’s jockey, C.J. McMahon, commented on the career defining moment, saying, “Coming up to the five-sixteenths pole, I saw a hole open up and I opted to go for it and he showed me he was game to go and so was I.” He then went on to say, “He accelerated and he finished phenomenally for me.” We managed to obtain these exact words directly from the official ESPN website.
Second place Dalmore set the pace but couldn’t hold the lead and ended up beating third place Whateverybodywants by just three-quarters of a length. The second favorite to win was Mo Tom who couldn’t manage better than a fifth place finish. The next step for Texas Chrome is likely to be the Grade 3, $400,000 Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park, but the exact race that he will be taking part in has yet to be confirmed.
For winning the Grade 3 $400,000 Super Derby at Louisiana Downs on Saturday, Texas Chrome walked away with $240,000 and this has now taken his total career earnings to $602,462. Son of Grasshopper, Texas Chrome was bred in Texas by Craig Upham and has now recorded a total of seven wins from 12 starts. We look forward to seeing him race again on September 25th.
