Runhappy Nets 5th Straight Victory, Trainer Sacked

Runhappy set a new record in Keeneland on Saturday 31st October, 2015, galloping home strong in the final furlong to beat runner up Private Zone and third place Favorite Tale in an exhilarating finish. The 3-year-old Super Saver colt, ridden by Hall of Fame jockey Edgar Prado, set a new track record of 1:08.58 and won the $1.5 million TwinSpires Breeders' Cup Sprint.
“The plan was to try to go to the lead, come rolling out of there, don't be bottled up behind horses,” said the jockey. He then went on to say, “Unfortunately, he's not real quick out of the gate. We used Plan B, which is stay behind horses. He took a little kickback and that's where he dropped a little back in the turn.”
Also running in this event were Masochistic, Alsvid, Barbados, Limousine Liberal, Big Macher, Ivan Fallunovalot, Stallwakin' Dude, Kobe's Back, Wild Dude, Salutos Amigos. Despite all of the celebrations after the event though, just one day later Runhappy’s trainer Maria Borell was sacked and will therefore no longer be conditioning the horse for owner James McIngvale.
“We really respect Maria. We think she's done a great job, but unfortunately it was time for us, as a team, to move forward,” said McIngvale's racing manager Laura Wohlers, who has also previously trained Runhappy. “The decision to move in a different direction was not made today,” added Wohler. “It was a conflict of interest. I wish her the best. She's been a big part of this horse's success, but we're going to be headed in a different direction.”
Runhappy foaled on March 4th 2012, is an American Thoroughbred racehorse and was bred in Kentucky by Wayne Lyster, Gray Lyster & Bryan Lyster. His major wins so far in 2015 included the King’s Bishops Stakes, the Phoenix Stakes and also Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint, bringing his total career earnings to more than $1,300,000.00. Saturday’s victory is the latest in a series of five consecutive wins.
Runhappy is also the first crop of foals sired by Super Saver - the winner of the 136th Kentucky Derby in 2010. Runhappy’s dame, Bella Jolie, also won two minor races in the same year at Delaware Park. All of the comments contained within this article were taken directly from the ESPN website.
