In other news, Lovely Maria (bred by Brereton C. Jones and trained by Larry Jones) earned her first ever stakes victory on Saturday 4th April after winning the Grade I $500,000 Ashland Stakes by 3 1/4 lengths. Lovely Maria went in to the race as the 9-5 favourite. This victory was also a first for Lovely Maria’s jockey, Kerwin Clark.
When the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard is updated you will be able to see Lovely Maria in there towards the top with 100 points, which she also managed to earn in the same event on Saturday. “It's been 40 years in the making. I thank God for Mr. Brereton Jones and Larry Jones -- I wouldn't be here if not for them,” said the Jockey.
He then went on to say, “It was a great trip. I thought I'd be more forwardly placed, maybe even on the lead. She's a nice filly just coming into her own and you can pretty much put her wherever you want her to be. She relaxed nice. Down the backside she's laying third and her ears are flicking back and forth, and I thought 'Boy, this is pretty good.' When I called on her she just accelerated.”
In our final note, the home of the Kentucky Derby and Longine Kentucky Oaks, the Churchill Downs Racetrack, announced over the weekend the 141 breast and ovarian cancer survivors to walk in the upcoming 2015 Kentucky Oaks Survivors Parade Presented by Kroger. The survivors were selected from across the United States by two of the events’ charitable beneficiaries, ‘Horses and Hope’ and ‘Bright Pink®’. This is the seventh annual Survivors Parade which is scheduled to take place just one day before the 141st Longines Kentucky Oaks. The march along the historic Churchill Downs homestretch is held to raise awareness of ovarian and breast health.
“We are pleased by the dramatic increase of support from across the country for the Survivors Parade,” said the General Manager of Churchill Downs Racetrack, Ryan Jordan. He continued, “The Survivors Parade has become one of the Kentucky Derby’s most important traditions, helping us drive national awareness and raise critical funds for important health issues. We look forward to walking with the 141 survivors in this year’s Survivors Parade.” These comments came from the official Kentucky Derby website.
