Kentucky Derby Winners

Added on: April 28, 2015

The 140th Kentucky Derby will be taking place this year on Saturday 3rd May at Churchill Downs, which is in Louisville, Kentucky, in the United States. This is a race for thoroughbred horses. It is held on a left-handed track over a dirt track surface and there’s a whopping US$2,000,000 purse up for grabs. The winner of this year’s race will walk away with $1,425,000.00 of this huge purse.

The total distance is 1 1⁄4 miles (10 furlongs; 2,012 m) and the fastest horse in the history of the Kentucky Derby was the 1972 winner ‘Secretariat’ who won the race in a time of 1:59 2⁄5 seconds. This event is often regarded as the most exciting two minutes in sports and it has been held since way back in 1875.

The very first winner was a horse called Aristides who was ridden by jockey Oliver Lewis and trained by Ansel Williamson. This horse won in a time of 2:37.75. Then, at the turn of the 20th century, Lieut. Gibson (ridden by Jimmy Boland and trained by Charles Hughes) won the race in a much faster time of 2:06.25.

Exactly 100 years ago, in 1915, Regret won in a time of 2:05.40. This horse was ridden by Joe Notter and was trained by James G. Rowe, Sr. Towards the end of the Second World War in 1945, Hoop Jr. won in a flat time of 2:07.00. This horse was ridden by Eddie Arcaro and trained by Ivan H. Parke.

If we fast forward more than 50 years and look at some of the latest winners, we can see that I'll Have Another (ridden by Mario Gutierrez and trained by Doug O’Neill) won in a time of 2:01.83 in 2012. In 2013, Orb (ridden by Joel Rosario and trained by Claude McGaughey III) won in a time of 2:02.89 and then just last year, most of you should still remember when California Chrome (ridden by Victor Espinoza and trained by Art Sherman) won in a time of 2:03.66.

Let’s now take a look at some of the contenders who will be running this Saturday. These horses are currently in the top ten positions on the Road to the Kentucky Derby series of races leaderboard. Sitting in tenth spot with 62 points is Far Right. At number 9 is Upstart with 76 points. El Kabeir is in eighth spot with 95 points. At number 7 is Materiality with 100 points and also on 100 points is Mubtaahij.
