International Star Wins Risen Star Stakes

Added on: Feb. 24, 2015

On Saturday 21st February, International Star won the Grade II, $400,000 Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds Race Course and Slots. Ken and Sarah Ramsey's International Star manage to squeeze through close to the finish to beat runner up War Story and third place Keen Ice. The thoroughbred also won the Lecomte Stakes at the same venue back on January 17, making it the second Stakes win in a row for the horse and the third Stakes victory altogether.

The other win came back in November 2014 when International Star rode to victory in the Grey Stakes on Polytrack at the Old Woodbine. He also finished in fourth in the Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs. This latest victory earned International Star 50 points towards the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard.

War Story earned another 20 points on the leaderboard and Keen Ice notched up a further 10 points. This means that International Star is now sitting pretty at the top of the leaderboard with a total of 71 points. International Star will also be running in the $1 million Louisiana Derby on March 29 at Fair Grounds. International Star is the 3-year-old son of the 2000 Kentucky Derby Winner, Fusaichi Pegasus.

Speaking about the win was International Star jockey, Miguel Mena. He started by explaining about breaking from the outside post “The post position worried me. You never know if you can get to the rail, where he wants to be. I was impressed because I moved at the five-sixteenths-pole to get through and he came through a tight hole and then another one at the quarter-pole and kept running and drawing away.” These words came from the official ESPN website.

“I think more distance will be no problem,” added Mena. He rates well, he loves the rail; it doesn't matter how tight the hole is -- he goes for it. When I put him on the rail, he grabs the bit and when we come up to a tight hole, he just goes for it. Not many horses do it. The more ground you save, the more you're going to get. He's not much to look at it, but he has a big heart.”

Right now in second place on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard is ‘Itsaknockout’ with 50 points. ‘Upstart’ is currently in third place with 36 points and ‘El Kabeir’ has moved down to fourth place with 25 points. In fifth place is War Story with 24 points.
