Exaggerator Beats Fourth Place Nyquist in Haskell Invitational
Added on: Aug. 2, 2016
Exaggerator romped to a clear victory on Sunday 31st July, 2016, in the $1,015,000 Grade 1 Haskell Invitational to beat heavily favoured Nyquist who ended up finishing the race in fourth place. It was the first time that Nyquist had competed in a race since finishing in third place in the Preakness.
The weekend’s event was a great rematch of the three top runners from this year’s Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs which saw Nyquist beat runner up Exaggerator and third place Gun Runner. Heavy showers before the race turned Monmouth into a sea of slop which is the ideal running ground for Exaggerator but the worse kind of ground for Nyquist.
Both horses were looking to make their mark in the Haskell but it was Exaggerator who took advantage of Nyquist’s recent illness and claimed the victory in emphatic style. Nyquist ended up drawing the rail in the Haskell which in turn led to a dire strategic plan to flash speed. He managed to pull away early with extraordinary speed but was soon matched for speed by several other runners. As the homestretch approached, Exaggerator looked certain to win an indeed cruised to victory on the fast track.
