Charitable Annuity Claims Victory in WV Breeders’ Classic

Added on: Oct. 13, 2015

Mark Russell’s 3-year-old Charitable Annuity claimed a victory on the evening of Saturday 10th October, 2015, in the $450,000 West Virginia Breeders' Classic at Hollywood Casino at the Charles Town Races. This sports facility and racetrack is owned by Gaming and Leisure Properties, it is controlled by Penn National Gaming and it located in West Virginia, sitting just outside of the eastern city limits of Charles Town. Charitable Annuity beat runner up Hidden Canyon and third place Little Big Sime.

Russell also had another runner competing on Saturday, Russell Road, but disappointingly this 9-year-old-finished in ninth while attempting to win its fourth ever state-bred stakes. “I'm very excited about Charitable Annuity and what he could do in the future,” said Charitable Annuity’s owner, Mark Russell. “On the other hand I'm disappointed how things worked out for Russell Road. He was in good position but he just didn't have it tonight. I checked with Jose Montano (jockey), and he said he came out of the race fine,” added Russell.

He then finished by saying, “We'll check him out and see how he is; maybe he bled. Yes, this very well could be it, but what a journey it has been. It's so hard to explain when you have as much love for an animal as this one.” We obtained these exact words from a recent ESPN.go.com article. Russell Road is trained by James W. Casey and throughout his career has amassed an incredible $1,964,366.00 thanks to 30 individual victories.

Casey, who owns Taylor Mountain Farm, said “He's getting better and better. He has shown a lot of ability. We thought he'd relish the distance, and he didn't prove us wrong.” This latest win means that Charitable Annuity has now won a total of six wins from nine starts and one of the other latest victories occurred in August when he won the state-bred Robert G. Leavitt Memorial Stakes at Charles Town. The cash taken from this event took Charitable Annuity’s earnings to $328,100.
