California Chrome Cruises to Victory in the Awesome Again Stakes

In a perfect build up to the Breeder’s Cup Classic, California Chrome cruised to victory on Saturday 1st October in the Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita Park. California Chrome, ridden by Hall of Fame finalist jockey Victor Espinoza and trained by Art Sherman, ended up winning the Grade 1 $300,000 event after beating second place Dortmund in style.
He foiled Dortmund’s new strategy on the weekend and strolled to an emphatic victory. It didn’t even seem as though California Chrome was running at full speed and the victory looked all too easy for the Dubai World Cup winner. “When he gets in front, he's a hard horse to get by, and I knew he'd wear Dortmund down with the fractions the way they were,” said Sherman when talking to www.bloodhorse.com.
“He took Dortmund's game plan away from him. He tried and ran a hell of a race, but you're looking at maybe the best horse in the world right now,” added Sherman. Dortmund was kitted out with blinkers and a slightly different plan of attack was in place. Dortmund hounded California Chrome to begin with and stayed close for a while but there was no way that he could keep up. Californian Chrome pulled away with approximately six furlongs to go and didn’t look back.
Jockey Espinoza said, “They wanna go with me, but I was, okay, let's roll. I knew what was going to happen. I knew what they'd try. But he's on his game right now.” He then finished by saying, “I had the one-hole, and if he didn't break, maybe then I try to get outside. But he broke well. It's hard to tuck in. So I let him go.” They can't keep up with him. They can try, but they can't,” added the Jockey. We managed to obtain these comments from the official ESPN website.
California Chrome has an incredible record, notching up as many as 15 wins from a total of 24 starts. Saturday’s easy win saw Californian Chrome pick up a cool $180,000 from the $300,000 purse and this has taken his entire career earnings to more than $13.4 million. Also this year, California Chrome has claimed several victories on top of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness victories (in 2014).
The first major Stakes win (ungraded) was the King Glorious Stakes in 2013 and then other wins included the California Cup Derby in 2014. Other most notable stakes wins in date order included the Graduation Stakes (2013), the San Felipe Stakes, (2014), the Santa Anita Derby (2014), the Hollywood Derby (2014), the San Pasqual Stakes (2016), as mentioned, the Dubai World Cup (2016) and the Pacific Classic (2016).There was also the San Diego Handicap (2016) and, not forgetting, the most recent win in the Awesome Again Stakes (Oct. 1st 2016).
