Annals of Time Wins Hollywood Derby and Vale Dori Shows Potential

Added on: Dec. 6, 2016

Annals of Time went in to the Grade 1 $302,415 Hollywood Derby at Del Mar on Saturday 3rd December as the least experienced but didn’t let this hold him back, winning the race in the final furlong. This was just his fourth ever start and he claimed his first stakes win in the Grade 1 turf race for 3-year-olds.

Annals of Time, a colt by Temple City, is trained by New-York-based Chad Brown and was ridden for the very first time by Javier Castellano who couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome. “It was remarkable the way he did it,” said the jockey. “I liked the way he split horses. I had a bad post and tried to save all the ground possible. I tried to save some ground on the last turn,” added Castellano.

Annals of Time completed the circuit in a time of 1:47.73 and beat runner up Beach Patrol at 7-2 at Frank Conversation who was also an outsider, priced at 19-1. In a field of 12 Annals of Time was 10th on the turn and was fifth with a furlong to go, but managed to finish in style ahead of runners like Hayabusa One and Free Rose. Also racing was Blackjackcat, Camelot Kitten, Revved Up, Isotherm, Diplodocus, Path of David, and Defiantly.

In other news, Vale Dori also showed potential on Saturday at Del Mar, winning the Grade 2, $201,035 Bayakoa Handicap. Vale Dori is owned by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum and trained by Bob Baffert and was ridden on the day by jockey Mike Smith. Speaking about the win, Baffert said, “She's improving mentally and physically. I think there's a lot more there.”

Vale Dori made her final start of the year on the weekend and claimed her first graded stakes victory since arriving in the US. She went in the race as the heavy favourite and secured an impressive 3 length victory, beating second place Wild at Heart and third place Moyo Honey. In fourth place was Show Stealer and in fifth place was Barbara Beatrice, followed by Autumn Flower, Gloryzapper and Desert Madam.
