California Chrome put in another strong workout on Saturday January 10th for a potential run at the San Antonio Stakes on February 7th. The Horse of the Year finalist, owned by Steve Coburn and Perry Martin, had a decent run and looked on fine form while training at his home race track, Los Alamitos Race Course.
California Chrome was ridden by Victor Espinosa and ran a total of 6 furlongs in a time of 1:11.60. “I got him in 1:11 2/5, but the official time was 1:11 3/5. He looked really good,” said son and assistant trainer of Art Sherman, Alan Sherman. He then added, “He was kind of being eased up at the finish.” We obtained these comments from the official ESPN Horse Racing website. California Chrome’s next run out is scheduled for Saturday, January 17th.
In other news, Calculator edged one step closer towards a run in the Kentucky Derby after winning the $100,750 Sham Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita Park. This victory added 10 more point to Calculator’s ‘Road to the Kentucky Derby’ leaderboard position. Calculator is now tied in second place with Carpe Diem who also has 10 points. The other four points for Calculator came on September 27th when he came second in his last race of the year at Santa Anita in the FrontRunner race. In the Sham Stakes, Calculator dominated with a 4-1 1/4 length victory over stablemate, Rock Shandy.
“I was very concerned because it looked like five or six of them were sending,” said Calculator’s trainer, Peter Miller, when talking about Calculator’s wide trip. He then finished by saying, “and I said, 'Oh, no. We're going to be 10-wide,' but he [jockey Elvis Trujillo] saw the same thing and he adjusted and brought him back into maybe the three or four path. We had a wide trip, but there's less trouble out wide.”
Seven horses are all now equal on 10 points in the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard, including Lucky Player, Leave the Light On, Dortmund, Daredevil, American Pharaoh, Mr Z. and Ocho Ocho Ocho. International Star has 11 points, Texas Red has 12 points, and as mentioned, Calculator has 14 points. Carpe Diem also has 14 points and El Kabeir is currently at the top of the Road to the Kentucky Derby series of races leaderboard with a total of 21 points.
